Christmas Volunteer Opportunities

Through The Salvation Army Community & Family Services:

Christmas Basket

The Christmas Basket Campaign provides a Christmas meal and partners with FLY FM/The Drive Radio Station who provides toys for children who might otherwise go without. There is a need for community groups and organizations to help sort food, pack and organize the boxes, assist on distribution and/or delivery day. We depend on volunteers to help make Christmas a little brighter to those who need it the most.

Christmas Basket Sponsorship Program

By sponsoring a family, you can be directly involved in making Christmas a little brighter for a participating family by purchasing and delivering their Christmas basket along with toys supplied by FLY FM/The Drive Radio Station. Each basket is approximately $85.00 - $110.00 in value to each household depending on the size of the family.

Food Drives

By organizing a food drive in your office, school, business or special event you can assist The Salvation Army to provide emergency aid throughout the entire year, especially the cold winter months when many are faced with higher utility bills.

Kettles

The Salvation Army depends on its familiar Christmas Kettle campaign to raise a substantial portion of its annual operating budget. These vital donations stay in Kingston to support the community in many ways: providing food and shelter for the homeless or those in need; helping individuals find permanent employment and housing and running a variety of programs for the community as well as providing critical services over the wintertime. And, in the current economic climate, these needs are only increasing. That’s why it’s critical for us to fill as many kettle shifts as possible.

Adopt-a-Kettle

By participating in the Adopt-a-Kettle program your group can help ensure a successful fundraising season in order for The Salvation Army to continue its critical work. Your group, company or organization can “adopt” a Red Kettle for a day and staff it with volunteers for two hour shifts. You can also choose to staff several kettles (maybe in same area) on a given day for a specific period of time. The program is flexible so we can find an option that best meets your needs.

Winter Warmth Wear

The Gathering Place endeavors to ease the discomfort from the elements through the Winter Warmth program. Individuals or groups can donate new winter wear items such as socks, hats, gloves, mitts, and scarves for distribution to our guests. Both purchased and/or hand-knitted items are of value in the Winter Warmth Program. This is a great ongoing project for a knitting group or as a fundraising initiative to purchase new items for distribution.

Santa Shuffle and Elf Walk

In addition to being a registered runner or walker, volunteers are needed to assist us with the annual Santa Shuffle 5K run/walk and the children’s 1K Elf run/walk. Opportunities as registers, road marshals or children’s activity helpers are ways to get involved with this fundraiser. Registration forms are found on the Running RoomWebsite www.santashuffle.com

Spread Some Christmas Cheer

Each year the Gathering Place Day Time Drop In celebrates the holiday season by hosting a Christmas Party for their guests. Groups or individuals interested in volunteering in this capacity could assist in the decorating and organizing of special music and activities. As well, small gifts or stockings for the guests would be most welcomed. Stockings could include warm socks, notebook and pens, personal items and of course, holiday candy.

Office Administrative Support

During the Christmas season Community and Family Services requires additional volunteer administrative support. Assisting the receptionist by answering the telephone, file management or completing Christmas Hamper applications with those applying are ways your administrative skills could be utilized.

Community Choice Pantry

Community and Family Services requires volunteers who can volunteer in the Community Choice Pantry by assisting those accessing this service as well as restocking of shelves. This service allows individuals and families to receive emergency food assistance, often when all other resources have been exhausted.

Monetary Donations

Through a monetary gift to the Salvation Army Community and Family Services, you are ensuring our services can continue to meet the needs of those most affected by hardship and poverty within our community. If you would like to designate the funds (kettles/hampers) you may do so in the memo line. All monetary donations to Community and Family Services remain in the community.
